Windows 2008 and WSS Roles Correction

As some of you who have read one of my earlier posts state that it is a requirement for you to set up a Server Role for WSS before you install MOSS 2007 on a Windows 2008 Server I now stand corrected.   Well actually i was correct the whole time but the boys from MSFT pulled a fast one on me and didn?t even tell me  :)    Last week while listening to Tom Rizzo who heads up the SharePoint Product Team he mentioned this...  Yes i did a doubletake and coughed out loud... Later while having lunch with Tom I asked him about this and he stated that this was being pulled as a requirement and would be addressed in an upcoming RC for Windows 2008.  There will be no need to add this service as a role and you will be able to do your normal installation of MOSS on top of Windows 2008 as you normally do now with Windows 2003.

Sorry for any confusion and I will be doing many more posts on the interoperability of the two in the upcoming months.   Hey guys lets face it... Windows 08 will be released early next year.  Get on it now and learn the system.. its pretty damn sharp.  I am now running all my labs on this OS.

Announcing Search Server 2008 Express

Just announced today is a new offering for search.   Not excited yet?   It runs on WSS... still not excited?  It has Federated Search built in.. Pretty cool huh?   I have been holding my tongue about this for about a month now while testing the bits. If you happen to be in Vegas this week and see me bopping around i will probably have my laptop and can provide a quick demo of the product.

Announcing the preview of the new Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Training

A few months back I posted about a new training product that was in the works from Microsoft. This was geared toward end users and in place of having formal training on hand the end user would be able to simply go through the modules at there leisure. Im happy to announce that

We have launched the Collaboration module of the end-user Office SharePoint Server Training as a preview on MSConnect. This first module will be followed by five more pillars that offer training on Business Process and Forms, Enterprise Content Management, Search, Business Intelligence, and Portals and Personalization. The training helps information workers become productive using Office SharePoint Server and WSS. The Office SharePoint Server Training will make it easy for IT departments to help their internal customers adopt and use Office SharePoint Server.

"The training, written by the Office Online User Assistance group, includes a video, interactive tutorials, and articles. It is built on the Microsoft SharePoint Learning Kit, which makes it SCORM compliant. It includes a reporting function that allows an administrator/trainer to track learners' completed training topics. The training can be customized to fit the look and feel of your own Office SharePoint Server site. You can also add custom training and remove training topics."

I installed this onto one of my lab machines and within minutes I was browsing through the module. I must say that compared to what I was testing earlier this year this has come a long way.

How do I plan to use this?

Great question. One thing I do like to do for my clients during an implementation is provide resources to further guide them in the use of MOSS. This application fits nicely in this plan and it slips in easily into a web application. Setting up a learning team site using the Training Application was very simple.

Currently there is a Collaboration module only but November promises new modules that can be snapped in.

So get over to the Connect site and sign up for the preview.

How do you connect to Connect?
