Welcome to the SharePoint Foxhole > SPFoxhole Blog > Categories
SPC 2009 and Bob

The date is approaching and many of us are looking forward to this not just for the content at the conference itself but because the NDA restrictions will be lifted and we can start to openly discuss SharePoint 2010 with the public.

For those attending that are SharePoint User Group leaders or looking to start up a User Group I will be hosting a session on Thursday at 9AM in the Lagoon area of the conference center.   No… this isn't some fountain dive and I have no idea where this area is but its what they told me so Lagoon it is.

This will be a joint Microsoft / event with the bulk of the panelists being seasoned UG Leaders and ISPA Evangelists.  Among those standing with me are:

Nick Swan (UK)

Mirjam Van Olst ( Holland)

Mo Omar ( Jordan )

Amanda Perrin (Canada)

Steve Soifen ( APAC)

Olivia Shone (Microsoft Community Lead)

We will be discussing the role of the in User Groups and how we are helping to foster groups and get them started. We will also use this as an opportunity for the Leads from around the world to voice there opinions and provide feedback to all on what they are having problems with and what they have been successful at accomplishing.  Hopefully all will walk away with some added knowledge to take back to their groups.

I will also be working the HOL area at various times during the week so if you want to come by and test out the labs I would love to meet up with you.

See ya’ll next week.

SDN June Event in Netherlands. I’ll be there

On June 26th please join me at the SDN (Software Development Network) event where I will be presenting a few sessions which include one on Best Practices for Virtualization with Hyper V and SharePoint along with two other sessions where i will again Co-Present with my mate on Kerberos.

Kerberos Part 1: no ticket touting here. Does SharePoint add another head?

Kerberos Part 2: Advanced Scenarios and additional considerations.

This will be my first trip over to the Netherlands and I am looking forward to meeting up with allot of old friends over there.  Sure there will be some form of a SharePint happening and I hear Amsterdam can be quite interesting as well.   Some sort of Red Light thing or something happening over there.   Will need to investigate  :)

So if your in the area and feel like coming down to say hi well just have at it.  Im really looking forward to seeing this part of the world.  Hope to see you there.

SharePoint User Groups Side Meeting at SPC2008

This is a very timely session as I with the help of an incredible group of Community Members have been working on putting out a offering for User Groups.   We are now offering free web space for groups.  These sites are based off of SharePoint and were using a combination of the CKS-UGE Template and if desired a standard Team Site that can be customized to fit your needs.  If you want more information please leave a reply or come up and chat me up at SPC.

I also want to take some time to thank some people that have been a great help with this effort.  This work remember is done on our free time and its for the good of the community.

Four Handsome Bastards out on the Town

Man i have to admit i am not a fan of Vegas in any way shape or form.  I grew up in Atlantic City so the gambling appeal just never was there.  hmmm Atlantic City... "Well they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night and they ...."   Sorry just felt a Bruce moment come over me.    Anyway.... although I don?t like AC (Atlantic City) I do LOVE AC (Andrew Connell)   here is a snap of me, AC (Capt BJ Action...inside joke and it refers to his gambling tendancies)  Mr SharePointPedia Lawrence Lui and way in the back is the infamous and truely gifted Maurice Pranther who i met for the first time but seems like I have known for years.... Great guy.

Vegas BABY!!  Its that time again

Yep, November rolls around and that can only mean one thing... besides an extra 10 lbs towards the end of the month.... VEGAS and SharePoint Connections.   The good folks over at Penton are again putting out a fine event over at the Mandalay Bay Resort and this years promises to be a good one.   Dont believe me?  have a look at the line up of presentations

I will be there with the rest of the B&R Business Solutions Team and an assortment of other MVP's and Microsoft BlueBadges so dont be shy.... walk up and say hi and tell us about your experiences with SharePoint (good and bad but hopefully less bad)  We would love to hear from you.

For me this is a great opportunity to meet up with people that I get to see a few times a year since were all so scattered about the world.  A fun time will be had by all.   Hopefully not as fun as we had our last night in Orlando though.... im still recovering.

So if you see us sitting in a session or walking around...

    SharePointBeagle November Edition

The November issue of the SharePointBeagle was released last week and with this being the second publishing I am amazed at how it has grown in just  a month.   For those of you not in the know the SharePointBeagle is the brainchild of fellow MVP Bob Mixon.  Bob approached me a couple months ago with this idea of a monthly newsletter and my initial thought was ok... just another media outlet we need to consume.... We have MSD2D and SharePoint Advisor and to a small extent TechNet Magazine (which is by far one of the better publishing's to date) and we now have a place inside Windows Magazine.  I have never liked MSD2D,  Jay Medero and I get in fights all the time over this fact but the information is so outdated its not even worth the look.  Advisor on the other hand I used to enjoy simply because of the guys they have on staff writing most of whom are close friends of mine.  Not to single anyone out of praise but Todd Baginski and Dustin have a great (He Said/She Said) column that gets me laughing every time.  So now we have another player... The Beagle or to be more exact The SharePointBeagle.   Why do i like this so much?   Well besides the fact that im heading up the Admin Corner... we have in one month received such a positive response and have had a large amount of community members submitting articles for publishing.  Its been great!!   So if your not signed up for this newsletter let me tell you what you missed in the last publishing.

The Featured Article for the month was provided by Paul Galvin from Conchango.  Paul wrote about creating a Permanent Management Solution on MOSS 2007

The Admin's Corner had 3 articles with one by yours truly on Backup and Recovery.  The Team from BambooSolutions also contributed 2 articles titled "Migrating Data to MOSS 2007" and how to "Deploy a Web Part in a Load-Balanced Environment"   Great stuff if i do say so myself.

The Development Shop again featured an article on "Code Access Security and SharePoint 2007 Web Parts."  Ok so im not going to jump up and down screaming yippee over the dev articles.... Im sure there fantastic but for those that know me well you know that Dev stuff is not favorite topic  :)

The Real World section featured a couple articles as well.   BambooSolutons again stepped up to the plate with an article on SharePoint 2007 Alerts

Finally in the Real World section we are presenting an article on the Content Query Web Part and Audience Targeting" by Natalya Voskresenskaya of Conchango.

Anyway folks if you havnt subscribed yet get your buts over to Mixon's site and sign up.  I was speaking with Bob today and although i cant say too much at this point as i am sworn to secrecy but ..... heck just subscribe... you will see  :)

    Enjoy!

The War Fighting Effort and Social Networking

I read recently a very interesting article today on how the frontline troops are now using social networking as a way to share ideas with their fellow combatants. Reading through this article brought back some old memories and its great to see these young men (and women) sharing their experiences and thoughts in this realm. Back in the 80's I was one of these fighting types. I served as Light Infantryman with the 7th Infantry Division based out of Ft. Ord (known by us as the planet) in California. This being the 80's the use of computers was pretty much left to the nerdy types and not guys training to protect our country and rain the mighty hand of Regan (remember him?) down on our adversaries. This was when we were still in the Cold War… Russia was still our enemy and the threat of a Super Power's Nuclear Missile Launch was still on a lot of minds. For me and my brothers in arms at that time computers and technology just wasn't on top of our list. We were very good at what we were trained to do but when it came down to the hard fact… we were just highly skilled shooters.

Flash forward to now. The cold war has ended. Im at least 60 lbs heavier and have given up the morning 5:30 wakeup call to start PT (physical Training….. Pushups, Side Straddle Hop, Rope Climbing and a leg numbing run up and down the hills of Central California) I also have some very close Russian friends and its funny how the ones that are my age report the same level of fear back in those days of us as we had in them. Yes the world is changing. Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have grown up with computers. They are all tech savvy. Let's forget email… These soldiers grew up using MySpace and are also now using FaceBook and blogs and podcasts and …… the list goes on. But these forums are open and non-secure. What's a grunt to do?

These fighters today are sharing information utilizing sites such as TroopIdeas and PatrolNet to get the word out to fellow fighters on using different techniques on how to better safeguard themselves in certain areas, equipment modifications, better ways to kick in a door and enter a room (Stack and Enter is what we used to call it) and so much more. A lot of this stuff is the same information we used to share but it was usually done at the Team / Squad / Platoon / Company level. You can read more from the article on PC World .

So although SharePoint isn't really covered here so much as Web 2.0 is the main focus and a couple groups that are putting together these sites…. SharePoint very well could enter this market…. Hey.. it may already for all I know.

If any of you start having thoughts on this and would like to hash out some ideas I can definitely say I would love to be involved in anyway. Yeah I can't run anymore like I used to and a couple other issues prevent me from getting into the fight again but I can contribute in this realm now. Id love to hear your thoughts on this subject
